A green charging-session indicator is not the complete answer.
Commissioning and service require separate decisions across installation, charging interface, controlled operation and corrective action.
Is the electrical installation safe?
Evaluate the applicable grid-side and charger-side protective measures with the correct test equipment and qualified responsibility.
Does the EVSE interface behave correctly?
Check connector and locking behaviour, Control Pilot (CP) and Proximity Pilot (PP) states, PLC (power line communication) or CAN communication, interlocks and configured error reactions.
Can the station complete a defined charging test?
Use an EV simulator to define charging requests, repeat start and stop conditions, and verify the station’s response.
Has the reported fault actually been removed?
Recreate the original test boundary, repeat the affected checks and compare the evidence before and after the repair.
Test the installed system across the relevant layers
Connect visual condition, electrical safety and charging behaviour.
The final test plan depends on the station, installation, charging technology, market and configured equipment. A complete field workflow makes every included and excluded layer explicit.
Visual condition
Cables, connectors, enclosure, labeling, damage, contamination and accessible components.
Grid-side safety
Applicable protective conductor, insulation, residual-current and installation measurements using the required qualified equipment.
EV-interface safety
Protective-earth interruption, isolation-monitoring behaviour, CP faults, residual voltage and configured interlocks.
Low-level charging
CP and PP states, duty cycle, plug connection, locking and technology-specific control signals.
High-level communication
DIN 70121, ISO 15118, CHAdeMO, NACS or other supported communication according to the selected configuration.
Charging function
Charge start, contactor sequence, voltage, current, stop behaviour and the station reaction to a controlled vehicle request.
Stability and duration
Defined 400 V or 800 V conditions, extended charging time, load behaviour and faults that emerge only after operation.
Documented result
Station identity, test configuration, executed checks, measured values, deviations and final field decision.
Scope qualification. Not every test system covers every layer. Grid measurements, charging interfaces, power levels, communication standards, error simulation and reporting depend on the selected hardware, software and options.

EVSE commissioning and field-service questions
What should be tested when commissioning an EV charging station?
A commissioning workflow should identify the station and configuration, inspect the installation, verify applicable protective measures, check the EV interface, establish a defined charging session, document deviations and create an attributable handover result. The exact scope depends on the installation, charging technology, local requirements and configured test system.
Can a DC fast charger be commissioned with a real vehicle?
A real vehicle can confirm that one specific vehicle–charger pairing completes a charging session at that moment. It does not provide controlled vehicle states and faults, verify the complete electrical-safety scope or reliably isolate whether a failure originates in the EVSE, vehicle or communication. For reproducible commissioning and documented diagnosis, a defined EV simulator and the applicable safety measurements are still required.
What is the difference between electrical installation testing and EVSE functional testing?
Electrical installation testing evaluates the supply-side installation and protective measures. EVSE functional testing evaluates the charging interface, communication, station reactions and the ability to conduct a controlled charging session. A complete commissioning plan may require both.
What should be checked after an EV charger repair?
Repeat the affected safety and functional tests, reproduce the original symptom where possible, verify the repair under defined conditions and record the final configuration, measured results and release decision.
Does the workflow cover AC and DC charging stations?
Yes, through appropriately configured test systems. Connector hardware, charging standards, voltage, current, safety functions and available measurement depth remain configuration-specific.
Can charging communication faults be diagnosed in the field?
Guided field systems can confirm charging function and expose defined errors. More complex protocol, timing or cross-layer failures may require EVCA Multi Mobile, EVCA Interop or laboratory reproduction with Charge Playback.
How can a charging-network operator check a supplier firmware update?
Record a baseline using the agreed Easy Chester reference procedure, document the EVSE hardware and firmware, apply the supplier update and repeat the defined checks. Compare the results, confirm the intended maintenance workflow and record the release decision and restrictions.
Deeper supplier, hardware or software qualification may require an appropriately configured EVCA with additional power, fault and standards-based test scope. Passing one reference procedure supports those checks; it does not prove compatibility with every vehicle.
